The Story of Stent (om.co)
tptacek 5 days ago [-]
An interesting chaser to this is the centrality of stents in discussions of provider-side abuses in the US health care system: I'm sure stents save a lot of lives, but there's broad agreement that they're also significantly overprescribed. Ironically, one of the things the US health care system does with extraordinary effectiveness --- making it quicker and more efficient to deliver services, in this case by placing stents in outpatient procedures --- also makes it easy for them to drive costs.

None of this has anything to do with Malik's own story! I'm glad for his experience with our system, one I'm increasingly mindful of as I'm just a decade or so behind him.

My FIL was stented and dead a week later from a massive clot which migrated post stent and blew his mind to pieces. It wasn't a good end. Stents are great and stents are also risky. It's the least worst choice sometimes.

Good to have a great outcome like this, happy 17th stent birthday.

What would've been the alternative to stent in your FILs case?

I met him for the first time outside Kresge—-that was YC’s first startup school (or demo day?). He was smoking 555. He had just finished his on stage session where he used flash cards instead of slides.

I remember when I got into the world of startups and businesses. GigaOm.com was a big deal.

A Silicon Valley Startup acquired my service company. We were told a whole lot of new terms, including but not limited to the Bus Factor, not to ride the Mumbai-Pune expressway with all the founding team in one car, etc. Om’s news was all over the Internet then, and suddenly, we were scared of the life of Startup stress.

Around that time, Om wrote about our launch[1] in a snippet, among many other web 2.0 launches. This was also the time when Om and a few others wrote about a blog post that knocked off $4 billion off Apple's Market Cap.
